Growing a Kitchen Garden

I grew up with parents who were very big into gardening – they still are! We had veggie gardens, flower gardens, decorative gardens, fruit trees, a grape arbor, you name it! Admittedly, as a child, I did NOT enjoy the process of gardening. Pulling weeds in the hot Indiana sun was not my idea of a fun morning chore – but looking back we reaped the rewards of a well-tended garden throughout the year. It really wasn’t until I was out of college that gardening suddenly seemed appealing to me – probably because I now know the price of fresh, organic vegetables is outrageous.

One day I really would love to have a plot of land with a garden on it, but in the meantime, I’m happy to start a little kitchen garden. I’m starting out with herbs and would love to eventually add a tomato plant, pepper plant, and maybe a lemon or orange tree. One of the best things about growing herbs in your house – the aroma they emit. Our apartment has never smelled fresher!

We’re really fortunate living in the South to have access to plants early on in the year so our growing time is much longer than you all who live up north. I’ve started out with 4 basic herbs and after I know they like their location I may add a few more. I bought a mint, lavender, sage, and oregano from a darling garden center just down the road from the Loft – Martin Garden Center. We also bought a beautiful rubber plant because he was just too pretty to pass up! If you’re Greenville local and are looking for a specific indoor or outdoor plant Martin Garden Center is likely to have what you’re looking for!

If you don’t know by now, I live in a loft-style apartment with 18-foot windows and 3 feet wide window sills – the perfect location for growing a kitchen garden! I’m not an expert by any means on growing things, but if you’re looking to start a garden or kitchen garden soil, watering, and light conditions are so important to make sure you have happy little plants.
