One of the best things about living in Upstate South Carolina is its proximity to the mountains. A quick 30-minute drive away from my house is one of prettiest state parks I’ve ever been to. If you’re looking for a nature-laden escape from reality, Jones Gap is the perfect place to go. Rustic trails, mountain views and cascading waterfalls ensure your visit will be well worth it. Recently, Lee and I braved the 2ish mile hike up to Rainbow Falls- a towering waterfall greets you at the end of your trip and no cell service for the duration of the hike offers about 3 hours of totally ‘unplugged’ exercise.
For me, fall is the best time to go hiking and this hike is a gorgeous one to climb when the leaves are bright and colorful and the air is free from humidity. Although not a ‘strenuous’ hike the 1.7 miles to the falls basically go straight up the mountain so if you’re not used to climbing, take your time, bring some water and expect to sleep well that night.
