Early Summer Garden Tips

Hiya!

Here we are in the heat of summer – 90s during the day already – and since my garden is sprouting and shooting up, I wanted to share a little 2021 gardening post. I love tending and cultivating my garden and hopefully will be able to continue to grow it throughout the coming years.

Today's post will share:

A Few Things I've Learned

  1. Never plant your tomatoes in the exact same spot year over year. Last year my tomatoes produced abundantly and this year they look a little sad. Just last night I saw some brown on the leaves and through some research determined that they might have a touch of blight due to the soil of last year's plants. Lesson learned.
  2. Complimentary flowers and herbs planted among veggies yield better harvest. I did some beginning of season research on planting strategies and found that flowers like marigolds, cosmos, and purple coneflower bring around pollinators and can clear out the soil of any unwanted pests.
  3. Not every plant is going to do well in your soil. You could spend a lot of money to create diverse, bio-beneficial soil for all your different kinds of plants... or you could not spend $300 on dirt and just buy the good old mushroom compost like me. If you do that though, be prepared to find some plants just don't thrive with that makeup.
  4. Don't get impatient and plant too early, even if you live in the South. I think I planted both my peppers and camomile too early this year. We had a freak frost the end of April and that killed off a few less hardy plants.
